Are You Gripping Your Golf Club Correctly?

For anyone that is first learning the game of golf, one of the most obvious things that one must learn to play a great golf game is to grip the golf club correctly.  Since the club and ball are the main objects in the game, it goes without saying that the beginner should know how to grip the club correctly.  If you would like to have some idea of how to grip your club before you sign up for lessons at the club, here are a few tips to learn how to grip a golf club correctly.

The grip on your club is the only way you connect and feel the golf club.  A proper grip is what gives you the control you need for the clubs face impact on the ball.  When learning how to grip a golf club correctly, you have to swing your body so that you imprint power to the ball.  When gripping a golf club correctly, your hand and the club become one in the move.  Always use your dominant hand for a stroke, since that is the way to hit the ball with precision.

To grip the golf club correctly, place the last joint of your index finger right under the club’s shaft.  Then, keep the club at a clear downward angle.  When you place the lead hand on the angle, put the left thumb on the back part of the shaft.  Try to imitate the moves of your instructor who will show you how to grip the golf club the right way.  For professional information you can check out the resources in the resource box below.

When gripping the golf club correctly, many people will have trouble managing the right strokes in the beginning.  It will all pay off if you PRACTICE!  You need to not only practice in the lessons you may be taking and on the golf course, but you also need to practice at home.  The more you practice the movement with the right grip, the better you golf game will be in the long run, even though at first you may find it frustrating and uncomfortable.  This is the first step in the golf learning process as you will soon go on to learn swing and be able to give the best shots possible.  If you practice the correct grip on your club, the rest of the game will follow.

How To Choose The Right Putter

When choosing the best putter for your golf game there are three things that should not be part of the equation.

  •    The putter that looks the nicest.
  •    The one the golf tour pro endorses.
  •    The putter that your best friend has.

Therefore, the most important consideration when choosing a putter that works for you, is to avoid all three of the above methods of choosing.

Putters have certain characteristics and specifications that can effect your putting game in good and bad ways. So here are the qualifications you need to be looking for when you are looking for a great putter.

  • The shaft length and lie angle (the angle the shaft comes out of the head of the club) must fit you in three ways
  • The club must allow you to address the ball with your eyes directly over the target line while your hands are under your shoulders.
  • The club must be long enough so you don’t experience any pain in your shoulders, legs, or back when practicing for long periods of time.
  • It must be short enough so it won’t catch your clothing while putting.
  • You should choose a design that will help eliminate your most common mistakes.

To help you determine which putter is best for you, start by putting a piece of impact tape on the putter you now use and stroke 30 putts. If your marks are mostly near the heel, you want a heel-shaft putter (the shaft enters the heel of the putter). If you tend to strike towards the head, you want a center shafted putter.

  • If you want alignment aids on your clubs, get them and use them. They are legal and anything that helps your stroke is incouraged.
  • Find a putter with a light club head. Try a few strokes with it, then take a couple of dimes to the back of the head. Does it feel better or worse to put with the added weight?
  • Grip size and shape are important factors. The grip needs to be small enough for you to control easily, but big enough so your fingers don’t overlap uncomfortably.

The putter is the only club allowed to have a flat top on the grip which allows for more consistent grip each time you use it.

Buy Great Golf Clubs Without Breaking The Bank

In the world of sports activities golf clubs are some of the most expensive equipment to buy. However, it doesn’t necessarily have to be that way. Expensive golf clubs admitedly have more technology and more features, but it isn’t necessary for the average golfer to have those features. Therefore, it is possible to get a great set of clubs at a reasonable price. The thing you may not realize is that most of the time the less expensive club might just be better for your game than the more expensive ones.

Beginning golfers are usually tempted to buy the more expensive clubs that they find on the sporting goods shelves because they think these more expensive clubs will improve their skills as if by magic. The truth is that an amazing golf club requires amazing technique and skill in order to get the advantage that the club is supposed to offer. Expensive golf clubs are designed to be more efficient and less forgiving. With the slightest wrong move, you will throw the trajectory of the ball way off your target. If you stay with a club designed for beginners (as you should), the heads of the clubs will be much more forgiving and you will be able to practice your technique with much more success.

If you still think you want to purchase the more expensive, high tech clubs you can still buy nice clubs without spending huge money.  You may golf with people who like to be on the cutting edge of technology. If you do, these high tech golfers might have an older set of clubs that are still of very high quality.  Ask them if they would be interested in selling their used clubs to you. When buying used clubs you need to be careful and look for anything that might compromise the quality of the clubs. Sometimes, if the used set of clubs has been used enough, they may actually be worn out and be nearly unusable. Before you agree to a final sale, take the clubs out for a test run. If you are a good friend of the person that owns the clubs, they might even let you use them for a little longer so you can see if they will work for you.

You can also find older model or used clubs at auctions, pawn shops, or garage sales. Many golf clubs are sold at auctions and you may even have a pretty wide choice at some auctions. Then there is the biggest auction of all.  Ebay.  Ebay has probably one of the larger collections of golf clubs and accessories on the planet. You will have a wide choice of new older models or high quality used clubs. You will find prices from the lowest price clubs to the highest prices clubs, but usually at quite a discount compared to a retail store.

There are many ways to save money when you are purchasing those new clubs you have been wanting, just do your homework before you decide what you want to buy. Do some research on the internet on various websites and forums where actual golfers talk about what they like about certain clubs. Learn all you can about what you really need and want out of your new clubs.

How Do You Know What Is The Best Golf Driver For You?

There are many different manufacturers of golf drivers and everyone of those manufacturers would love to have their particular brand of driver in you golf bag. But, with all of those different choices of drivers out there, which one is the right one for you? There is no simple answer and if you were to ask ten different golfers as to which driver is the best, you would more than likely get at least five different answers.Usually the best club for you has nothing to do with the brand of club. The best club for you is simply the one that works best for you. In other words, the guy who is swinging the club has to make the determination as to which club works the best for them. The best place to find this out is to go to a golf equipment store with a driving range and try out some of their different products. See which driver fits your hands the best and which feels the best to you. The different grips that are available can make a huge difference in the way the club feels to you.

Look At The Head

The head of the driver can make all of the difference in your game. Originally, the head of the driver was constructed of wood, but since has evolved into many different and lighter materials to increase club speed and increase driving distance. You need to look at not only the size of the head, but the material it is made of. Composite materials are supposedly better as well as the size and angle of the clubface. You want to look at the angle to determine how much loft you will get off the tee shot. The higher degree of the angle of the clubface the more loft you will get on your shot.

Consider The Shaft

Look at what the shaft is made out of as well the length. You want to have a length that you will feel comfortable with. The legal length for most drivers is between 40 and 48 inches if you want to be in line with USGA rules. You want something that will not break but that will have enough give to allow for some swing in your swing. Most shafts today are primarily made out of graphite as this material allows for greater club speed which will increase force, which should essentially increase the length of your drive.

Consider all aspects of your driver in order to not only maintain your game, but to continue to improve. You want to choose the driver that is best for you, not necessarily the club that is the most money. The “best” may not be the best club for you.

Callaway Golf Clubs-Are They The Best Choice For You?

It doesn’t matter if you are a beginning golfer or a seasoned veteran, you have no doubt heard of the Callaway brand of golf clubs and accessories. Callaway is one of the top suppliers for the entire golf industry. If you are in the market for new golf clubs, you will likely want to consider Callaway products at some point. They are certainly not for everyone (as no golf club is), but they offer a large enough range of products that you might just be able to find something that you would like to use. Here I will describe some of the things offered by Callaway clubs, and what sorts of golfers use them.

One thing Callaway is most famous for is its drivers. They are able to hit balls further than any other drivers. Most of the time these are against regulation for actual official golf games, but if you are just going out to the driving range you shouldn’t have a problem. The engineers at Callaway spend literally years developing the drivers, and adjusting every little piece of it to make it into the perfect piece of golf equipment. Usually the shaft is very light, while the head of the golf club is shaped perfectly and given a good amount of weight. The specifications depend on the model that you choose, but most of the time their super drivers have hollow heads (making them technically Woods).

While Callaway offers products that could be used by the most professional of golfers, they also have quite a few that are more geared towards beginners. You can use some of these specially designed clubs or club sets to familiarize yourself with the game and become very proficient with your strokes. This will allow you to become an excellent player before you even begin to spend huge amounts of money on your golf equipment. Some of the best items might include the adjustable golf clubs, or the half-set that leaves you with just the basic choices to familiarize yourself with. Look for these products at your local club store, or in an online Callaway catalog. You may also be surprised to learn that you can buy both used and new sets or single clubs and other Callaway equipment on eBay.

Callaway’s product line doesn’t end at golf clubs. You can also buy anything else you need for the game through Callaway. This includes golf apparel, which everyone knows is a must-have when you are going to spend a day on the course. Golf shoes are the best for moving across the grass that makes up the ground of the golf courses, and other golf apparel such as hats and shirts will protect you from the brutal elements involved in the game. If you are an easily sunburned person, then you should find the proper shading and protection in order to avoid having your skin burned while you play.

As with any company, Callaway sells a large range of golfing products. Whether you are a beginner or an expert or somewhere in between, you will be able to find a product that works for you. Do some research on the internet and figure out what exactly you are looking for out of a golf club set. Bring these requirements with you when you go shopping. This will allow whomever is helping you at the golf shop to narrow things down much faster and help you more efficiently for a better end result for everyone involved.

Do You Know Where You Can Buy Great Golf Accessories?

If you want the sport of golf to be more enjoyable you need great golf accessories.  Golf accessories can range from cases to protect your clubs, to small handheld score calculating computers. If you have a product in mind, you can probably find it at your local golf club store. However, sometimes local golf stores won’t have as big of an inventory as you would like, or they may not carry the item at all. If this is the case, then you will have to look elsewhere for your desired golfing accessory. There are several things you can do to track down what you want.

First, you could check out classified ads in as many resources as you can. The internet offers many different places for people to post their ads, on sites like CraigsList.com. Keep an eye out on these sites for anyone with the product that you want, so that you can immediately call them up and be the first one there. Local newspaper classifieds are also a good source. Don’t forget to check out yard sale and garage sale ads that might lead you to finding what you need. If you head to the right parts of town for yard sales, you will find quite a few people who are looking to unload their old golf equipment. As long as what you want isn’t the latest and greatest, you might be able to find something similar to what you are looking for.

You can also look on sites that sell the items online. EBay is the website that comes to mind first for most people, and this is a very good place to start looking. EBay is one of the biggest repositories of all things old and no longer widely available. But don’t just look on eBay for old stuff.  There is plenty of new equipment on eBay too. There are also quite a few online golf accessory stores that may offer what you need. The bigger stores are generally more reliable and more trustworthy than the average eBay seller, and they also sell new items.  As long as you are sure that you are getting a quality item and not some cheap version that will break right away, these sites are very good to check out. Your favorite search engine will quickly lead you to an abundance of them.

Your fellow golfers are another great resource when it comes to getting useful golf accessories. Golfers tend to go through more accessories than players of any other sport, so you can usually count on some of your golfing buddies to have some old items that they wouldn’t mind parting with. You can offer a percentage of the retail value, or you can simply ask for it for free. Usually golfers will understand the compulsion to accessorize, and will not mind hooking up someone who is an ally. Take advantage of this camaraderie if you can, and avoid making unnecessary trips to the golf store to buy overpriced accessories.

If you try all of these different resources, you are almost guaranteed to find what you need. Just remember to be thrifty when it comes to golf equipment. Even if you feel like you can afford it, you still don’t want to get too free with your wallet and start tossing checks everywhere for all kinds of equipment. This is a good way to waste huge amounts of money without having much to show for it in the end except for a bunch of accessories that you might not use very much.

Stuff You Need To Know About Golfing Greens

Knowing how to drive and putt are not the only things you need to learn about playing golf.  Aside from the obvious interference that the weather can cause, there is also the conditions of the surface that we play on.  In order to be successful at the game of golf, we need to learn about the greens.

Since golf is an outdoor activity you play on a living, breathing, and constantly changing portion of land, and, as in everything else that we do out of doors, Mother Nature also loves to play this game.

Grasses are different and they play very different.  That is part of the challenge of playing different golf courses as opposed to playing your home course all of the time.  (And you thought it was only the layout of the course.)  You might encounter a plush putting green or a weed patch with little growth at all.  The putt can be altered by the length and texture of the grass, and how much grass is actually there.

A true golfer doesn’t play only on sunny days with no breeze, it is quite common to see a golfer with an umbrella (to protect the clubs) playing in the rain.  Like any other outdoor activity, the rain changes how you putt a golf ball.  You will also come across a condition that is created by man, that is recognized by few golfers, this is called the “lumpy donut”.  However, this is not a real threat.

In the United States you will most likely be playing on one of two types of grass:

  • Bent is a cool weather grass found in the northern states, it is soft with fine blades growing close together, and this creates a carpet like texture.  It can’t take prolonged heat or humidity.
  • Bermuda is used in the warmer climates; it is a strong weedy grass that handles warmer climates and humidity found in the southern states.  The blades are long, broad, shaggy and sparser; golfers describe it as a wild shag rug which causes the ball to rise and fall in and out of the blades.  Bermuda also has a grain, the direction in which the grass grows.

Their differences create very different playing surfaces for golf.  Balls will roll truer on bent grasses and the break will be caused by the slope of the land.  With Bermuda your shot can be affected by uneven growth patterns in the grass.  This is why when watching golf tournaments on television, you will often see the golfers or caddies examining the greens.  They are studying the lie of these grasses to try to figure out how the ball will react.

The best  place to figure out for yourself  how your shots will be affected  to the different types of grass is to spend a lot of time on the practice green.
